The first coconut varietal contest in Samoa (and as far as we know the first in the world), was organized in October 1984 by Sammy Sione, from the Samoan Ministry of Agriculture. Fifty-three farmers brought each a sample of 10 whole fruits (with husk). These samples were weighted and then the kernels were extracted and weighted again.
The table here under summarizes the results of this contest. Winners were those for which the percentage of kernel on the whole fruit was the highest, with values between 41.5 and 37.5 %. Analysis of the results shows some interesting patterns. The winners are not those who presented the heaviest fruits, but some of those who presented small or medium fruits with good composition. Many of the heaviest fruits have the baddest composition.
Names of winners are
Iusi Misipati (Saleimoa), Sosaiete Aoga Faata'ita'I (Sapapali'i), Toago Savai'i (Leauvaa), again Sosaiete Aoga Faata'ita'I (Sapapali'i), Vaifale, and Peter Kohlhase (Vaimoso). It would be interesting to re-locate the farms were these fruits come from.
As a framework of comparison, we also included in the table some results obtained in Côte d’Ivoire for varieties from the Pacific available in the Coconut Genetic Resources database: Rangiroa Tall, Rennell Island Tall, Tahiti Tall, Tonga Tall and Solomon Island Tall. These values are averages calculated on a randomized sample of 50 palms per varieties. Obviously, this contest allowed to identify palms with fruits much bigger and with a better composition than values obtained on average from Pacific varieties.
